Dexter's Big Day Out

3 months ago Tue 1st Oct 2024

At Blackpool Transport, we recently had the privilege of organising a very special day for Dexter, a young boy living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and his family. We went above and beyond to create a memorable experience, demonstrating our commitment to the local community and making public transport accessible for everyone.

Dexter has been a lifelong fan of buses, and despite being diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at a young age, his passion for buses continues to bring him joy. This condition affects his mobility, heart, and lungs, but his enthusiasm for everything transport-related has never wavered.

When Dexter’s parents, Alban and Jen, reached out to thank us, we were deeply touched by their kind words. They expressed heartfelt gratitude for the thought and effort we put into planning a day full of surprises for Dexter. From personalised bus tours and an exclusive visit to the tram depot to special gifts like destination blinds, posters, and a bus number plate, we made sure every detail contributed to an unforgettable experience.

Dexter, wearing a cap and a yellow high-visibility vest, is standing proudly in front of a Blackpool Transport double-decker bus. The bus has "DEXTER" displayed on the front destination sign, marking this special Make-A-Wish moment. The scene takes place outdoors, with a few other buses visible in the background. Dexter smiles joyfully, clearly excited about the experience.

In a letter to us, Dexter’s parents wrote: "Your kind gifts are being studied, with many questions asked about the contents of the literature on your buses. A wall display is being planned – with your posters, number plate, and postcards all part of it." They continued, "Your organised day was utterly splendid, with the generous gifts and personal bus tour being the cherry on the cake for him. Every interaction with your staff hits top marks for being people and community-focused.”

This day was a reminder of the importance of inclusive service provision, ensuring all members of our community, including wheelchair users like Dexter, can easily and comfortably use our services. Dexter’s family praised our friendly, professional staff and accessible transport options, adding, "Blackpool Transport Ltd are no doubt proud of what they provide to all members of their community, and rightly so."

James Clough, our Finance and Commercial Director, shared: “It was an honour to host Dexter and his family. We take immense pride in our team and their dedication to serving the local community with excellence. We’re thrilled to have made such a lasting impression on Dexter, and we can’t wait to welcome him back next year to experience our new fleet of Enviro 400CityEV buses.”

Dexter’s family plans to return to Blackpool soon to see the arrival of our new fleet, further strengthening the special bond we’ve formed with them. We can’t wait to welcome them back and continue being a part of Dexter’s love for public transport.
