Blackpool’s ‘Hero’ bus honours local servicemen and women

In the run-up to Armistice Day, we are recognising the dedication and sacrifices of local members of the armed forces by unveiling a special ‘Hero Bus’ that will take to the streets of the Fylde Coast from tomorrow (Tuesday, November 3).
With a bold, eye-catching poppy design, the bus also features the names of more than 60 veterans and serving members of the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Lea Harrison, Blackpool Transport Managing Director, explained: “Back in June, as part of Armed Services Week, we launched an initiative that asked the community to submit the names of service personnel, both past and present, for display on the bus, which has been unveiled today.
“We’ve been delighted by the response from members of the public to the appeal, and every name submitted represents a story, a sacrifice, and a connection to our local community that we should all be immensely proud of.
“As well as operating customer services, the bus will also be stationed near the War Memorial in the town centre during Blackpool’s remembrance service.”
As a further mark of respect, the bus and tram operator will be offering free travel for military personnel, veterans and cadets in uniform on Remembrance Sunday (November 8) and Remembrance Day (Wednesday, November 11).
“We will also be taking part in the two-minute silence at 11.00 am on both days, with tram and bus service coming to a standstill where it is safe to do so, enabling customers and our employees to reflect on the sacrifices made by our armed services heroes,” Lea added.
On both Sunday and Wednesday next week, a number of bus diversions will be in place to make way for remembrance events in Blackpool and surrounding areas, and customers are advised to look out for service updates before they travel.
