Wyre Council secures temporary transport service to support Fleetwood during tram disruption

Today Tue 16th Jun 2026

Wyre Council has worked in partnership with Blackpool Transport to introduce a temporary shuttle service in Fleetwood, ensuring continued access to the town centre and market following disruption to tram services on Lord Street.

The closure of tram lines after the recent fire has had a significant impact on local businesses, particularly market traders and town centre retailers. In response, Wyre Council moved quickly to secure a solution that maintains vital connectivity for residents and visitors.

From Tuesday, a free ‘tram replacement’ shuttle bus will operate between Fisherman’s Walk and Fleetwood Market on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, running from 10:00am to 3:30pm.

The temporary service has been arranged at short notice through close collaboration with Blackpool Transport, with both organisations working together to minimise disruption and support the local economy.

The shuttle will provide a direct link between the tramway and the town centre, helping residents, visitors and shoppers continue to access key destinations while tram services are suspended.

Wyre Council officers highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the closures have had a “very significant impact” on market traders and other businesses in Fleetwood.

Blackpool Transport has also committed to promoting the service through its communication channels, including social media, on-site information and outreach to visitors, ensuring customers are aware of the temporary arrangements.

Councillor Peter Le Marinel, Portfolio Holder for Planning Policy and Economic Development at Wyre Council, said: “Following the disruption to tram services on Lord Street, we recognised very quickly the impact this was having on our local businesses, particularly our market traders.

We’ve worked at pace with Blackpool Transport to put this temporary service in place, ensuring residents and visitors can continue to access Fleetwood town centre.

This is a great example of partnership working to support our high street, and we’re pleased to be able to offer a practical solution while the tram service is affected.”

Lea Harrison, Managing Director at Blackpool Transport, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Wyre Council to support Fleetwood during this disruption.

In response to pleas from stallholders and their customers, we’ve introduced a free shuttle bus service on the busiest market days, and we will continue to do all we can to help maintain access to the town centre while the diversions are in place.”
