Celebrating the amazing women who help keep Blackpool Transport moving
3 months ago

This International Women’s Day, we are celebrating the amazing women who keep Blackpool Transport moving every day. From bus and tram drivers to engineers, planners, and conductors, their dedication plays a major role in keeping services running across the Fylde Coast.
Reflecting this year’s theme, GiveToGain, we are proud of the supportive environment our teams create, sharing skills, encouraging one another, and helping colleagues succeed. To mark the occasion, we spoke to some of the women across our business about their experiences here at Blackpool Transport.
First we spoke to Nicky, who joined us six months ago. Before moving to Blackpool, she worked as a bus driver in Leeds. She said: “People are often shocked to see a woman behind the wheel, but I get to be out here representing and breaking the stereotype.” One of her proudest achievements is challenging the idea that driving is a man’s job- “It isn’t at all,” she said. Her message to women considering the sector: “Don’t be scared just do it! If I can do this job with nine children, you can do it, anyone can.”
Lisa joined us two years ago as a seasonal tram conductor before moving into Customer Experience last October. “I just thought it would be a nice job and planned to do a season,” she said. “I ended up staying for two and was then offered a permanent role.” On being a woman in transport, Lisa added: “I’m happy to represent women in Transport, there’s no difference between us in our roles, we all do the same job.” Her advice? “Just go for it, don’t let the idea that transport has traditionally been a male-dominated industry put you off.”
Meanwhile Amanda has worked with us full-time for six years as a bus driver and is now one of our small group of female trainers. She said: “There are times when it’s difficult. In training, I see so many different personalities.” When asked what makes her proud, she added: “Whenever I see my trainees out in service and they’re loving it, seeing them wave and smile, it makes my day.” Her message to women considering a career in public transport: “Do it. Just go for it!”
Across our teams, women like Nicky, Amanda and Lisa play a vital role in keeping Blackpool Transport moving. This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to celebrate their contribution, their resilience, and the supportive culture at Blackpool Transport that helps everyone succeed.
