Fleetwood school embraces tram safety message

Tramway safety was recently the subject of the day for youngsters at a Fleetwood school, as we step up our campaign urging pedestrians of all ages to pay attention to their surroundings when approaching tram tracks.

Although trams are one of the safest forms of public transport, national research has shown that pedestrian inattention was the leading cause of accidents, prompting a nationwide safety campaign.

We were one of the first UK networks to embrace the initiative from the Light Rail Safety and Standards Board and are now taking the ‘Two Lines = STOP’ message into local schools.

Steven Staley, Tramway Operations and Safety Manager here at Blackpool Transport, explained: “In addition to reinforcing this important advice, a recent visit to Cardinal Allen School in Fleetwood gave us the chance to talk to Year 7 and Year 8 about all aspects of tramway and the importance of behaving sensibly when using the tram or when near the tracks.”

Over the next few months, members of our team will be visiting other schools close to the network as part of our wider efforts to maintain the system’s excellent safety record.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all members of the public to take extra care in areas where trams operate, and to make sure they look both ways when approaching the tracks,” Steven added.
