Blackpool is well known for its thrilling rollercoasters, amusement arcades and donkey rides, However, as the month's rollover and the temperature drops, what is there to do in the wintertime? The seaside town attracts millions of people throughout the summer months and even though the holiday period is over, there is still plenty on offer to keep you off the couch and on your feet and we've put together some of the best things to do during this lively period.

The Fifth Floor

A new themed entertainment and event suite in the famous Blackpool Tower!

Take a trip to the famous Blackpool Tower this winter, The Fifth Floor is a brand new and totally free venue for all families featuring the very best in family entertainment. The new space includes a Family bar, special circus-themed arcade and the only 8K Virtual roller coast in Blackpool. Entrance to The Fifth Floor is completely free! 

See amazing magic, live singers, fun family hosts and much more. The venue is open to the public on weekends throughout the Christmas period.

Getting here couldn't be any easier, all of our buses stop in the town centre,  just a short walk to the tower. Our services 1, 5, 6, 7, 11, 17 and Tram go along the promenade and stop outside the tower.

Affinity on Ice

Get your skates on as this Christmas, Affinity Lancashire are set to transform the centre into an ICE-travaganza! With 6 weeks of events from 14 November – 26 December. The free ice rink will be officially opened by Dancing on Ice star Daniel Whiston on Thursday 14th November and will be open to the general public 7 days a week throughout the festive period.

Ice skating

Adding to the festivities, on Saturday's there will be free entertainment for families to enjoy. Entertainment will include Frozen 2 themed events with the famous ice princess skating on our ice rink, live ice sculpturing of Santa’s sleigh or the chance to step inside a winter wonderland with our giant snow globe.

If skating isn’t the thing for you, give your family a magical start to Christmas with a visit to Santa’s Grotto. Santa will arrive on his sleigh from the North Pole on Saturday 16th November and will be welcomed by his biggest fan Buddy The Elf. Santa will then be here every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for children to visit free of charge, before returning to the North Pole on Sunday 22nd December.

There are tales to see and laughs to be had when it comes to Pantomimes in Blackpool.  

Plan your winter family panto entertainment and have your heartstrings pulled and experience this classic story as you’ve never seen it before, with Mooky the Clown as the little wooden boy who dreams of springing to life! The pantomime starts on 23rd November and will run to 19th January so get out your diary and choose the best date for all the family. Flying into Blackpool for Christmas 2019 is the swashbuckling adventure, Peter Pan! Meet the Peter and the lost boys, Tiger Lily and Tinker Bell and get ready for a family show full of fun, fairy dust and pirates galore. Set sail for Neverland and take on Captain Hook and prepare for out-of-this-world flying effects, galleons of laughter and the hungriest of crocodiles. Blackpool Christmas Lights Switch on 

This year, the switching-on of the Blackpool Christmas lights will be accompanied by live entertainment in the town ahead of the main event, and in true form, a celebrity will be flipping the switch.

The 2019 Christmas lights in Blackpool will be switched on by Queen of the Jungle and star of Ant and Dec’s Saturday night take away Scarlett Moffatt. Moffatt, who started life out on the Gogglebox sofa, said she has always been a big fan of Blackpool and regularly visits the resort with friends and family. She has revealed she has always enjoyed dance competitions at the Winter Gardens.

The Blackpool Christmas lights switch-on take place on Saturday, November 30, 2019. The free and live entertainment starts at 3pm, with the main lights being turned on at 4.30 pm. There will be a firework finale to celebrate. The main event will take place on St John's Square off Church Street but lights will be found throughout the town centre. Free parking will be available at selected town-centre car parks.

Late Night Shopping

This year Houndshill Shopping centre are keeping their doors open till late each Thursday in December in the build-up to Christmas. For everyone that works during the week, worry no more as the shopping centre will be open till 8pm on these nights. This means that your favourite stores such as Debenhams, New Look, Footasylum, Peacocks, Jack Jones and River island will all be open so there is no stress when It comes to finding the time to look for Christmas presents for loved ones or some shopping for yourself!

There will be free hot chocolate and Millie's cookies, whilst stocks last and Christmas themed entertainment on the mall from 10am till 2pm with vocal/ saxophone duo Sara & Gabor. The Shopping Centre will be open on Christmas Eve for all those last-minute shoppers too!

Houndshill Shopping centre is located at Victoria street, just west from winter gardens. All our buses stop in town so it would be a short walk through the town centre to get here.
